سُورَةُ الوَاقِعَةِ

WHEN THAT which must come to pass [at last] comes to pass,

جب واقع ہونے والی واقع ہوجائے

there will be nought that could give the lie to its having come to pass,

اس کے واقع ہونے میں کچھ جھوٹ نہیں

abasing [some], exalting [others]!

کسی کو پست کرے کسی کو بلند

When the earth is shaken with a shaking [severe],

جب زمین بھونچال سے لرزنے لگے

and the mountains are shattered into [countless] shards,

اور پہاڑ ٹوٹ کر ریزہ ریزہ ہوجائیں

so that they become as scat­tered dust –

پھر غبار ہو کر اُڑنے لگیں

[on that Day,] then, shall you be [divided into] three kinds.

اور تم لوگ تین قسم ہوجاؤ

Thus, there shall be such as will have attained to what is right: oh, how [happy] will be they who have attained to what is right!

تو داہنے ہاتھ والے (سبحان الله) داہنے ہاتھ والے کیا (ہی چین میں) ہیں

And there shall be such as will have lost them­selves in evil: oh, how [unhappy] will be they who have lost themselves in evil!

اور بائیں ہاتھ والے (افسوس) بائیں ہاتھ والے کیا (گرفتار عذاب) ہیں

But the foremost shall be [they who in life were] the foremost [in faith and good works]:

اور جو آگے بڑھنے والے ہیں (ان کا کیا کہنا) وہ آگے ہی بڑھنے والے ہیں

they who were [always] drawn close unto God!

وہی (خدا کے) مقرب ہیں

In gardens of bliss [will they dwell] -

نعمت کے بہشتوں میں

a good many of those of olden times,

وہ بہت سے تو اگلے لوگوں میں سے ہوں گے

but [only] a few of later times.

اور تھوڑے سے پچھلوں میں سے

[They will be seated] on gold-encrusted thrones of happiness,

(لعل و یاقوت وغیرہ سے) جڑے ہوئے تختوں پر

reclining upon them, facing one another [in love].

آمنے سامنے تکیہ لگائے ہوئے

Immortal youths will wait upon them

نوجوان خدمت گزار جو ہمیشہ (ایک ہی حالت میں) رہیں گے ان کے آس پاس پھریں گے

with goblets, and ewers, and cups filled with water from unsullied springs

یعنی آبخورے اور آفتابے اور صاف شراب کے گلاس لے لے کر

by which their minds will not be clouded and which will not make them drunk;

اس سے نہ تو سر میں درد ہوگا اور نہ ان کی عقلیں زائل ہوں گی

and with fruit of any kind that they may choose,

اور میوے جس طرح کے ان کو پسند ہوں

and with the flesh of any fowl that they may desire.

اور پرندوں کا گوشت جس قسم کا ان کا جی چاہے

And [with them will be their] companions pure, most beautiful of eye,

اور بڑی بڑی آنکھوں والی حوریں

like unto pearls [still] hidden in their shells.

جیسے (حفاظت سے) تہہ کئے ہوئے (آب دار) موتی

[And this will be] a reward for what they did [in life].

یہ ان اعمال کا بدلہ ہے جو وہ کرتے تھے

No empty talk will they hear there, nor any call to sin,

وہاں نہ بیہودہ بات سنیں گے اور نہ گالی گلوچ

but only the tiding of inner soundness and peace.

ہاں ان کا کلام سلام سلام (ہوگا)

NOW AS FOR those who have attained to righteous­ness - what of those who have attained to righteous­ness?

اور داہنے ہاتھ والے (سبحان الله) داہنے ہاتھ والے کیا (ہی عیش میں) ہیں

[They, too, will find themselves] amidst fruit- laden lote-trees,

(یعنی) بےخار کی بیریوں

and acacias flower-clad,

اور تہہ بہ تہہ کیلوں

and shade extended,

اور لمبے لمبے سایوں

and waters gushing,

اور پانی کے جھرنوں

and fruit abounding,

اور میوہ ہائے کثیرہ (کے باغوں) میں

never-failing and never out of reach.

جو نہ کبھی ختم ہوں اور نہ ان سے کوئی روکے

And [with them will be their] spouses, raised high:

اور اونچے اونچے فرشوں میں

for, behold, We shall have brought them into being in a life renewed,

ہم نے ان (حوروں) کو پیدا کیا

having resurrected them as virgins,

تو ان کو کنواریاں بنایا

full of love, well-matched

(اور شوہروں کی) پیاریاں اور ہم عمر

with those who have attained to righteousness:

یعنی داہنے ہاتھ والوں کے لئے

a good many of olden times,

(یہ) بہت سے اگلے لوگوں میں سے ہیں

and a good many of later times.

اور بہت سے پچھلوں میں سے

BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil?

اور بائیں ہاتھ والے (افسوس) بائیں ہاتھ والے کیا (ہی عذاب میں) ہیں

[They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair,

(یعنی دوزخ کی) لپٹ اور کھولتے ہوئے پانی میں

and the shadows of black smoke -

اور سیاہ دھوئیں کے سائے میں

[shadows] neither cooling nor soothing.

(جو) نہ ٹھنڈا (ہے) نہ خوشنما

For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures,

یہ لوگ اس سے پہلے عیشِ نعیم میں پڑے ہوئے تھے

and would persist in heinous sinning,

اور گناہ عظیم پر اڑے ہوئے تھے

and would say, “What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? -

اور کہا کرتے تھے کہ بھلا جب ہم مرگئے اور مٹی ہوگئے اور ہڈیاں (ہی ہڈیاں رہ گئے) تو کیا ہمیں پھر اُٹھنا ہوگا؟

and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?”

اور کیا ہمارے باپ دادا کو بھی؟

Say: “Verily, those of olden times and those of later times

کہہ دو کہ بےشک پہلے اور پچھلے

will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]:

(سب) ایک روز مقرر کے وقت پر جمع کئے جائیں گے

and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie,

پھر تم اے جھٹلانے والے گمرا ہو!

you will indeed have to taste of the tree of deadly fruit,

تھوہر کے درخت کھاؤ گے

and will have to fill your bellies therewith,

اور اسی سے پیٹ بھرو گے

and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair -

اور اس پر کھولتا ہوا پانی پیو گے

drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!”

اور پیو گے بھی تو اس طرح جیسے پیاسے اونٹ پیتے ہیں

Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day!

جزا کے دن یہ ان کی ضیافت ہوگی

WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth?

ہم نے تم کو (پہلی بار بھی تو) پیدا کیا ہے تو تم (دوبارہ اُٹھنے کو) کیوں سچ نہیں سمجھتے؟

Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit?

دیکھو تو کہ جس (نطفے) کو تم (عورتوں کے رحم میں) ڈالتے ہو

Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation?

کیا تم اس (سے انسان) کو بناتے ہو یا ہم بناتے ہیں؟

We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us

ہم نے تم میں مرنا ٹھہرا دیا ہے اور ہم اس (بات) سے عاجز نہیں

from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you.

کہ تمہاری طرح کے اور لوگ تمہاری جگہ لے آئیں اور تم کو ایسے جہان میں جس کو تم نہیں جانتے پیدا کر دیں

And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]?

اور تم نے پہلی پیدائش تو جان ہی لی ہے۔ پھر تم سوچتے کیوں نہیں؟

Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil?

بھلا دیکھو تو کہ جو کچھ تم بوتے ہو

Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth?

تو کیا تم اسے اُگاتے ہو یا ہم اُگاتے ہیں؟

[For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament],

اگر ہم چاہیں تو اسے چورا چورا کردیں اور تم باتیں بناتے رہ جاؤ

“Verily, we are ruined!

(کہ ہائے) ہم تو مفت تاوان میں پھنس گئے

Nay, but we have been deprived [of our livelihood]!”

بلکہ ہم ہیں ہی بےنصیب

Have you ever considered the water which you drink?

بھلا دیکھو تو کہ جو پانی تم پیتے ہو

Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down?

کیا تم نے اس کو بادل سے نازل کیا ہے یا ہم نازل کرتے ہیں؟

[It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]?

اگر ہم چاہیں تو ہم اسے کھاری کردیں پھر تم شکر کیوں نہیں کرتے؟

Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle?

بھلا دیکھو تو جو آگ تم درخت سے نکالتے ہو

Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being?

کیا تم نے اس کے درخت کو پیدا کیا ہے یا ہم پیدا کرتے ہیں؟

It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us], and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives].

ہم نے اسے یاد دلانے اور مسافروں کے برتنے کو بنایا ہے

Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sus­tainer’s mighty name!

تو تم اپنے پروردگار بزرگ کے نام کی تسبیح کرو

NAY, I call to witness the coming-down in parts [of this Qur’an]

ہمیں تاروں کی منزلوں کی قسم

and, behold, this is indeed a most solemn affirmation, if you but knew it!

اور اگر تم سمجھو تو یہ بڑی قسم ہے

Behold, it is a truly noble discourse,

کہ یہ بڑے رتبے کا قرآن ہے

[conveyed unto man] in a well-guarded divine writ

(جو) کتاب محفوظ میں (لکھا ہوا ہے)

which none but the pure [of heart] can touch:

اس کو وہی ہاتھ لگاتے ہیں جو پاک ہیں

a revelation from the Sustainer of all the worlds!

پروردگار عالم کی طرف سے اُتارا گیا ہے

Would you, now, look down with disdain on a tiding like this,

کیا تم اس کلام سے انکار کرتے ہو؟

and make it your daily bread [as it were] to call the truth a lie?

اور اپنا وظیفہ یہ بناتے ہو کہ (اسے) جھٹلاتے ہو

Why, then, when [the last breath] comes up to the throat [of a dying man],

بھلا جب روح گلے میں آ پہنچتی ہے

the while you are [helplessly] looking on -

اور تم اس وقت کی (حالت کو) دیکھا کرتے ہو

and while We are closer to him than you, although you see [Us] not -:

اور ہم اس (مرنے والے) سے تم سے بھی زیادہ نزدیک ہوتے ہیں لیکن تم کو نظر نہیں آتے

why, then, if [you think that] you are not truly dependent [on Us],

پس اگر تم کسی کے بس میں نہیں ہو

can you not cause that [ebbing life] to return - if what you claim is true?

تو اگر سچے ہو تو روح کو پھیر کیوں نہیں لیتے؟

[ALL OF YOU are destined to die.] Now if one happens to be of those who are drawn close unto God,

پھر اگر وہ (خدا کے) مقربوں میں سے ہے

happiness [awaits him in the life to come], and inner fulfillment, and a garden of bliss.

تو (اس کے لئے) آرام اور خوشبودار پھول اور نعمت کے باغ ہیں

And if one happens to be of those who have attained to righteousness,

اور اگر وہ دائیں ہاتھ والوں میں سے ہے

[he, too, will be wel­comed into paradise with the words,] “Peace be unto thee [that art] of those who have attained to right­eousness!”

تو (کہا جائے گا کہ) تجھ پر داہنے ہاتھ والوں کی طرف سے سلام

But if one happens to be of those who are wont to call the truth a lie, and [thus] go astray,

اور اگر وہ جھٹلانے والے گمراہوں میں سے ہے

a welcome of burning despair [awaits him in the life to come,]

تو (اس کے لئے) کھولتے پانی کی ضیافت ہے

and the heat of a blazing fire!

اور جہنم میں داخل کیا جانا

Verily, this is indeed the truth of truths!

یہ (داخل کیا جانا یقیناً صحیح یعنی) حق الیقین ہے

Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sus­tainer’s mighty name!

تو تم اپنے پروردگار بزرگ کے نام کی تسبیح کرتے رہو
